How to stay resilient during your job search

As recruiters, particularly at Swarm, we are well equipped to support you as job seekers with the tangible stuff - CV and cover letter writing, interview prep and support with applications. Sometimes what can be overlooked is support with your mindset. The market is hard right now with lots of set backs for job seekers and your mindset is what is going to get you through to a job offer.

Here are some ways that you can build your resilience during your job hunt:

Set small, measurable goals

Break up the job hunt into smaller tasks - 4 job applications a day, 1 networking event a month, 3 new contacts a week. Small, regular wins keep the momentum going.

Reframe rejection

See it as a redirection and not a failure, each no is a step closer to the job that is the one for you. Bear in mind that also, often it isn’t personal - although it can absolutely feel like it. Following a rejection, list 3 things that you learned from the experience.

Utilise your support network

Don’t just seek jobs, reach out to your friends and family for support; talk openly and honestly about your experience. You could also try and find a mentor or connect with other job seekers.

Have a routine

Treat your job search like a working day - start and finish times with regular breaks. This will help to avoid the fatigue of always being “on”. It will also help to have non working tasks such as exercise or volunteering into your weeks.

Celebrate effort, not just results

Give yourself credit for completing tasks: completing an application, getting some feedback, learning a new skill. Keep a journal of your progress and you could also give yourself small rewards - a walk in your favourite space, baking a cake, a trip to see a friend or whatever will make you smile.

Move daily

Boost your mood with daily movement - a walk, stretch or exercise session. This will also help you to break up your day.

Practice mindfulness/meditation

Use one of the many apps available to help reduce your stress. This can also help keep thoughts positive and support the visualisation of success.

Learn continuously

Upskill so you can keep up to date with the most recent developments in your field and be trained to the highest standard. The development will not only make you more appealing to potential employers but will also build your confidence.
